Purple Sage Golf Course is a Public Amenity That Serves the Region

Residents and visitors alike tee off at the Purple Sage Golf Course at 401 Kindler Drive near downtown Evanston. This 18-hole public course opens the first week in April and runs into the fall. Because it is a public course, rates are affordable, starting at $34, with discounts for youth and seniors.
“The golf course is in tremendous shape for a public facility, and Evanston is an extremely friendly place to visit and play a few rounds,” says Scott Ehlers, PGA Professional of Purple Sage. “And it’s only 70 minutes from Salt Lake City.”
This golf course enhances residents' quality of life while also attracting tourists to the region. It is an economic development asset that’s also a great place to spend an afternoon.
Purple Sage Supports All Golfers
The Purple Sage Golf Course features practice greens, a driving range, a pro shop, 18 holes of golf, and a variety of tee boxes for different yardages. “It’s made for all golfers, whether you’re a brand-new beginner or a seasoned professional,” says Ehlers.
The golf course is also busy. There are tournaments almost every weekend, most of which support local non-profits and community groups. In 2026, there are 28 tournaments on the calendar, some of which last multiple days with different rounds.
“Purple Sage is my passion,” says Ehlers. “I watched it grow from a nine-hole golf course into an 18-hole. I want to make it the best course it can be.”
The Golf Course Contributes to Evanston Tourism
With nearly 30 tournaments a year, Purple Sage is a major tourism driver in Evanston. Golfers often stay overnight downtown, filling hotel rooms and patronizing local restaurants and stores.
“We work hard to bring people to Evanston,” says Ehlers. “The golf course doesn’t just entertain the town; it supports the entire Wasatch Front, through Uinta and Lincoln counties and even Kemmerer.”
Ehlers says golfers come from all over to play on Purple Sage. He wants Evanston to be a destination for golfers and other recreational travelers. His team works to provide quality golf experiences, while other hospitality businesses in town support visiting golf enthusiasts.
The golf course's impact is also significant because it’s open for only five to six months a year. Residents and visitors golf as much as they can during the warm months, while the course tries to accommodate as many tournaments and events as possible.
Non-Golfers Can Also Enjoy the Course
You don’t have to love golf to appreciate Purple Sage. During the winter months, residents can rent skis at the nearby recreation center and run a cross-country course that stretches up to two miles. The track is free and allows residents to exercise outdoors, even when snow is on the ground.
Residents can also enjoy a meal or drink at the Fairway Restaurant and Bar, a full-service restaurant that opens with the course during the first week of April and remains open through December. It’s closed for a brief period each Spring.
Ehlers also encourages people to give golf a chance. It’s a great activity if you remember that you won’t always have the perfect swing.
“Golf is a wonderful sport if you have the right outlook and don’t expect to hit it great all the time,” he says. “You can come out, get some sunshine, have a beverage, and be around people you like being with.”
The wonderful views of Uinta County and well-maintained grounds make Purple Sage an exceptional course to learn on and enjoy.
