Residents of Evanston and the surrounding areas can access emergency, inpatient, outpatient, surgical, and rehabilitation services at Evanston Regional Hospital, a 25-bed critical access hospital (CAH) located on the west end of Evanston. The hospital offers a wide range of specialty services, including cardiology, general surgery, orthopedics, urology, podiatry, rehabilitation services, infusion therapy, and sleep medicine – helping patients access quality care in Uinta County.
Evanston Regional Hospital has received national recognition as a “Top Rural and Community Hospital” for six consecutive years. The Chartis Center for Rural Health named the hospital to its “Top 100 Rural and Community Hospitals” list.
As a trusted healthcare provider in Uinta County, the hospital plays an important role in delivering timely, compassionate care to patients and families across the region.
“Rural healthcare is about more than convenience, it’s about providing quality care close to home when it matters most,” says Mary Armijo, CEO of Evanston Regional Hospital. “We’re proud to serve Evanston with a team committed to compassionate, patient-centered care.”
The hospital also implemented a telestroke program with the University of Utah Health, bringing specialized stroke care to patients in Uinta County. Sometimes hospitals need to transfer a patient to another hospital for a higher level of care. ERH collaborates with nearby facilities to facilitate transfers when necessary.
“Strong regional partnerships allow us to expand access to care while keeping patients connected to their local healthcare team,” says Armijo. “When additional specialty services are needed, we help coordinate that care while continuing to support patients here in Evanston.”
Evanston Regional Hospital Strengthens Healthcare Access in Rural Wyoming

Evanston Regional Hospital received its Critical Access Hospital (CAH) designation in 2025, reinforcing its commitment to strengthening healthcare services for rural communities.
Recently, Evanston Regional Hospital expanded its capabilities with the addition of 10 swing beds, providing a bridge between hospital and home with 24/7 care for patients recovering from surgery or illness. This allows families to remain close to their loved ones in Evanston rather than traveling to larger metro areas like Salt Lake City or arranging temporary housing during the healing process.
The hospital also includes two intensive care unit (ICU) beds, supporting the treatment of patients with more complex medical needs locally, while still providing access to larger facilities when advanced specialty care is required.
Providing Timely Emergency and Outpatient Care Close to Home
In emergency situations, access to timely care can make a significant difference in patient outcomes. Armijo emphasizes the importance of having emergency services in Evanston and speaks of the value of the care her teams provide.
“Having emergency care available locally is incredibly important in rural communities,” says Armijo. “Our team is equipped to respond quickly and provide immediate treatment when every minute counts.”
In addition to inpatient and emergency services, Evanston Regional Hospital offers a variety of outpatient care options, including orthopedic care, outpatient surgery, rehabilitation, physical therapy, and sleep medicine.
“Our providers have the opportunity to build relationships with patients and better understand their medical histories,” says Armijo. “That personalized approach can make a meaningful difference in the patient experience.”
Receiving follow-up care locally helps patients stay connected to providers while reducing travel time, often associated with specialty care in rural areas. Access to care closer to home can also make scheduling and recovery more manageable for patients and their families.

Supporting the Community
Evanston Regional Hospital remains an important part of the Evanston community, supporting local healthcare access and providing a range of clinical, administrative, and support roles in the area. The hospital employs more than 200 people, from leading surgeons to entry-level support staff, with an annual payroll of approximately $20 million.
Beyond patient care, the hospital also contributes to the local economy through employment, partnerships with area businesses, and community support initiatives. The hospital works alongside local organizations and community partners to help address the healthcare needs of residents across Uinta County and provided nearly $18,000 in local sponsorship support in 2025.
“Local hospitals play an important role in rural communities,” says Armijo. “We’re focused on continuing to meet the healthcare needs of Evanston and the surrounding area.”
Helping Patients Navigate the Cost of Care

Evanston Regional Hospital prioritizes transparency and patient support throughout the care process. The hospital has completed a third-party review comparing pricing to similar institutions across the country and within the region. The hospital works to align pricing more closely with regional and national benchmarks.
Patients also have options. Through MDsave, individuals can compare pricing and shop for certain services in advance. In addition, Evanston Regional Hospital offers flexible payment plans and will work directly with patients, including, whenever possible, reviewing documented quotes from other facilities.
The hospital encourages anyone with questions to reach out. Their team is available to walk patients through their options and ensure they feel informed, supported, and confident in their care.
